The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) was formed in 2006. It grew from the former Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and is a part of the Department of Computer Science. The aim of the reorganized department is to educate and to conduct research in broad fields related to Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics. The origin of this department is the Department of Electrical Engineering at Kumamoto Technical College, established in 1917.
The Department of CSEE is composed of three research divisions: Computer Science and Communication Engineering, Frontier Technology for Energy and Devices, and Human and Environmental Informatics.


Electrical, electronic, computer, and information technologies in recent years have greatly affected almost all industrial fields. These fundamental technologies affect every facet of our lives. Engineering in these fields is boundless in its reach and includes countless technical possibilities. The urgent need in engineering education is to produce engineers and researchers who can develop various types of advanced technology that demonstrate unsurpassed creativity.
To this end the Department of CSEE intends to educate students so that they can achieve advanced expertise in their field, be capable of flexibly dealing with rapidly advancing technology, obtain a deep understanding of the influence of technology upon human beings and society, and develop self-enlightenment skills and a strong desire to explore and develop unknown fields.
In other words, our goal is the education of engineers who can contribute to global science and technology based on consideration of humanity, society, and the future of the planet.

Computer Science and Communications Engineering

Research areas in the division include Computer Architecture, System Software, Operating Systems, Algorithms, VLSI System Engineering, Electromagnetic Waves and Diffraction Optics. The goal of this division is to realize a ubiquitously networked society through the cooperative studies of hardware, software and communication technologies.

Frontier Technology for Energy and Devices

Electrical energy and electronic devices are fundamental and vital technologies that support our society and its infrastructure. In this division, studies are conducted in Electric Power Systems, Electrical Energy Conversion, Electrical Energy Applications, Environmentally Oriented Electronics, Superconducting Devices, ULSI Technology, and Nano-Structure Devices.

Human and Environmental Informatics

The aims of the division are the development of elemental technology for people, the environment and information networks, and the systematic integration of the three. Research subjects in this division include Cyber Communications, Speech Interfaces, Biomedical Engineering, Systems Integration, Cybernetics, Multimedia, Information Measurement Processing, Image Information Processing, and Intelligent Circuits and Systems.
