Department of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry

Education

In the Department of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry, we aim to nurture researchers and engineers who can contribute to society through their advanced expertise and expert skills related to the various fields of Chemistry and Bioscience, Chemistry and Materials, and Materials Science and Engineering. The Education Programs of the Faculty of Engineering (4 years) are part of a 6-year continuous education program linked with the Graduate School’s (Graduate School of Science and Technology Master’s Program) Department of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry, allowing the opportunity for increased specialization by continuing on to graduate school.
First year students in this department study basic engineering courses common throughout the entire Faculty that act as a bridge from high school education, as well as basic department courses related to materials science and applied chemistry. From the second year, students are separated into the Chemistry and Bioscience, Chemistry and Materials, and Materials Science and Engineering Education Programs, and through lectures, experiments, and practice in their specific field, students obtain even higher levels of expertise and skills. In the fourth year, students become involved in their graduation research, and they obtain creativity based on engineering theory, practical thinking abilities, and the ability to get things done by working on issues that utilize their expertise and skills.

Chemistry and Bioscience Education Program

In the Education Program for Chemistry and Bioscience, we aim to nurture talent who can become researchers and engineers who possess a wide range of expertise and skills in the field of bioscience, and by involving themselves in challenging issues at the forefront, can actively and flexibly solve a variety of problems from a global perspective in this international society.
This education program features a curriculum where students first master basic engineering courses, where they learn fundamental sciences like chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, etc.; basic department courses where they learn fundamental bioscience; and general education courses, where they study social sciences and humanities to learn wide-ranging knowledge and culture. Students then are able to learn in lectures, experiments, and practice courses about a wide variety of knowledge, from basic to applied bioscience. Courses are especially focused on experiments and practice, and students learn not only cutting-edge techniques, but also international-standard knowledge on the environment and safety. Students obtain knowledge and skills related to the field of materials chemistry, from the basics to applied areas, that can be used in a wide variety of future career paths. We offer this education program as a six-year continuous program in conjunction with the Graduate School of Science and Technology Department of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry Master’s Program so that students can obtain even more advanced expertise.

Materials Science and Engineering Education Program

In the Education Program for Materials Science and Engineering, in addition to teaching the basics of materials engineering and other related general engineering studies, we aim to nurture engineers and researchers who pursue global issues from a materials engineering standpoint and have the ability to systematically and cooperatively solve these issues and contribute to society.
First, students take department courses in addition to general education courses and then progress from fundamental courses in the field of materials science to courses focused on application and development as they continue into the later years of their education. The curriculum also emphasizes experimentation and practice and offers sufficient abilities upon graduation that can be applied to a future career.
